New York Business Referral Networking Meetup Group Review February 1, 2018

The New York Business Referral Networking Meetup Group held its first official meetup on Thursday February 1, 2018 at ReadySet! Offices 1120 6th Avenue 4th Floor New York, NY 10036.

I have been to thousands of Meetups and networking events in the last twenty years. Some great, some good, some bad, some terrible. I took over and re-created the New York Business Referral Networking Meetup Group to provide a different and valuable way for business professionals to network, build their businesses and grow.

I started organizing the New York Business Referral Networking and Brooklyn Business Referrals Networking Meetup Groups for eighteen reasons:

  1. I do it for the community.
  2. To build a community
  3. To give back to the entrepreneur community
  4. To serve entrepreneurs and business owners
  5. To follow my mission: “Enhancing the lives of those I touch by helping people reach their goals
  6. To give referrals and introductions
  7. To build a network
  8. To attract like-minded people
  9. To learn and grow
  10. To practice loving kindness
  11. To practice compassion
  12. The New York Entrepreneurs and Startup Meetup Group charges for events I do not
  13. The New York Marketing Association Meetup Group charges for events I do not
  14. Business Networking International is not fit for everyone
  15. The Manhattan Chamber of Commerce is not fit for everyone
  16. To improve my leadership skills
  17. To attract business partners
  18. I have been blessed to meet people and learn things over the past ten years I would not have been able to, if I wasn’t organizing meetup events.

The New York Business Referral Networking Meetup Group was a unique and special Meetup for several reasons.

First, I had a wrong address that does not exist published as the location. Fifteen members went to this non-existent address yet followed my emails and instructions to find the New York Business Referral Meetup Group and me.

Second, we made sure to state what we were looking for an to describe a good referral for each of us.

Third, we used a round table discussion format to foster meaningful discussions at the New York Business Referral Networking Meetup Group event. We had three conversations about members ideas, challenges and issues. This resulted in a thoughtful and insightful exchange of suggestions, ideas and resources.

Fourth, the venue was excellent. It is a short walk from Bryant Park, Grand Central Terminal, Times Square and The Port Authority. The conference room was large, wide, well-lit and ventilated. There was plenty of room to network, a large enough set of adjoining tables and bottled water, tea and coffee.

Fifth and not least, Georgia Gournas was a gracious, responsive and attentive host. She approached me about the group, offered the venue and that night offered to host and cater another Meetup. Her sense of humor came out when I told her about the wrong address mishap. Learn more about her here:

Among the folks I networked were:

Gene Panasenko (https://www.linkedin.com/in/genepanasenko/) I have known Gene for over four years since we met at the now defunct Business Events of New York. Gene is an asset for the New York Business Referral Meetup Group.  He is a deeply connected, highly involved and indefatigable networker. He is fearless in how he starts conversations and builds relationships with strangers at events.  He is also a very skilled Multilingual Advisor, providing comprehensive financial services with a highly personal level of communication, accessibility and accountability to both domestic and international clients since 1996.

Over the years, I have watched meetups grow, as friendships develop and people in the meetup community learn and share with each other.

Organizing events has its share of ups and downs. But the benefits far outweigh the challenges. Among the reasons to organize a meetup networking group, for me the New York Business Referral Meetup Group ALWAYS comes down to the community.

The next New York Business Referral Networking Meetup Group Mixer will be on Thursday March 1 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at ReadySet! Offices 1120 6th Avenue 4th Floor New York, NY 10036.
