Celebrating Life and Memory: Día de Muertos at First Unitarian Church of Dallas

Celebrating Life and Memory: Día de Muertos at First Unitarian Church of Dallas

As the crisp autumn air settles over North Texas, our community came together to honor, remember, and celebrate. On Friday, October 30, 2026, First Unitarian Church of Dallas opened its doors for a deeply moving and joyful Día de Muertos Potluck, Art Display, & Celebration.

Rooted in tradition and embraced with warmth, this annual gathering offers a sacred space to remember our loved ones who have passed on, transforming grief into a vibrant celebration of life, heritage, and community connection.

A Feast of Flavors and Heritage: The Community Potluck

The evening kicked off with a magnificent community potluck that truly showcased the culinary heart of our congregation and guests. Tables overflowed with homemade dishes, traditional favorites, and comfort foods brought to share.

  • Traditional Delicacies: Attendees enjoyed sweet pan de muerto, spiced Mexican hot chocolate, tamales, and savory dishes lovingly prepared from family recipes passed down through generations.
  • A Sharing of Stories: Eating together provided a natural prelude for storytelling, where community members shared cherished memories, laughter, and anecdotes of the ancestors and friends they hold dear.
  • Inclusive Fellowship: True to the spirit of Unitarian Universalism, the potluck welcomed individuals from all backgrounds to sit side-by-side, fostering deep connections and shared warmth.

Art, Ofrendas, and Remembrance

Following the meal, the celebration transitioned into an inspiring showcase of creativity and devotion. The church spaces were thoughtfully adorned with vibrant marigolds (cempasúchil), flickering candles, and intricate papel picado.

  • The Community Ofrenda: A stunning central altar (ofrenda) served as the emotional anchor of the evening, beautifully decorated with photographs, mementos, and favorite foods left in loving tribute to departed family members and friends.
  • Local Art Display: Artists and creators from within the congregation and local community displayed original artwork, paintings, textiles, and sculptures reflecting themes of life, transition, and remembrance.
  • Reflective Atmosphere: Ambient music and quiet spaces allowed everyone attending to reflect, meditate, and experience the comforting beauty of shared mourning and celebration.
  • Mariachi Damas de Tejas again entertained us with their wonderful songs and music.  – Truly the best mariachi I have ever seen! Their voices! Their talent! We were thrilled that they agreed to join us for a second year. They got us all dancing and played us some Selena as a special treat!
  • Despite a gentle drizzle, Amy Martin again led a copal ceremony and added a perfect moment of depth and connection at the end of our celebration. We are grateful for the presence, wisdom, and experience she brings.. And we are grateful for the opportunity to connect to our lost loved ones in such a real way.

Events like our Día de Muertos gathering remind us of the enduring bonds of love that tie us together across generations. Thank you to everyone who brought a dish, shared a piece of art, contributed to the ofrenda, and brought their whole hearts to this unforgettable evening.
