What is Bealtaine?
Bealtaine (pronounced byal-tina) is one of the four major Gaelic seasonal festivals. Historically, it marked the beginning of summer when cattle were driven out to the lush summer pastures. It is a festival of light, fertility, and growth.
While our ancestors lit massive bonfires on the hills of Ireland to protect their livestock and bless the coming harvest, we carry that spirit forward by celebrating the “fire” within our own community—the creative energy, the warmth of friendship, and the abundance of the earth.
The Evening’s Schedule
5:00 PM – The Community Potluck
We begin with the “feast” portion of the tradition. In the spirit of hospitality, we invite everyone to bring a favorite dish. Whether it’s a seasonal spring salad, a family recipe, or just something that brings you joy, the potluck is where we weave our individual stories into a shared meal. It’s a time to catch up with old friends and welcome newcomers into our circle.
6:00 PM – The Community Ritual
Following the meal, we will transition into a sacred space for the Bealtaine ritual. Led by our Earth Centered Spirituality practitioners, this ritual is designed to be inclusive and participatory. We will honor the union of the Earth and the Sun, set intentions for the “blooming” season of our lives, and perhaps even pay homage to the Aos Sí (the Good Neighbors) to ensure a fortunate summer.
Why Celebrate Together?
In a world that often feels fast-paced and disconnected from the natural world, gathering for the “Quarter Days” allows us to pause. It reminds us that we are part of a larger cycle. At First Unitarian, Earth Centered Spirituality isn’t just about ancient history—it’s about finding a modern connection to the land we live on and the people we live beside.
Is This For Me?
Absolutely. Whether you are a lifelong Pagan, a “spiritual but not religious” seeker, or simply someone who loves a good potluck and meaningful conversation, you are welcome here. This is a family-friendly event, and we encourage all ages to participate in the joy of the season.
We look forward to seeing the “bright fire” of our community shine this May!
