Why I Can’t Wait to Get My Hands Dirty at Owenwood Farm and Neighbor Space
There is something incredibly powerful about a space that completely redefines what it means to serve a community. For a while now, I’ve been watching the incredible work happening over at the Owenwood Farm and Neighbor Space in East Dallas, and I am absolutely thrilled to share that I’m officially jumping in to volunteer.
If you aren’t familiar with Owenwood, it isn’t just a community garden, and it isn’t just a neighborhood center. It is a beautiful, breathing example of what happens when a community decides to transform an underutilized space into a vibrant hub of holistic wellness, food justice, and genuine human connection.
Here are a few reasons why I cannot wait to roll up my sleeves and get started:
1. Cultivating Fresh Food and Food Justice
Owenwood sits in an area of East Dallas that has historically faced significant challenges with food access. By partnering with organizations like Grow North Texas, they’ve turned acres of land into an urban farm that grows fresh, organic, nutrient-dense produce directly for the surrounding community.
As someone who deeply believes in the power of plant-based health and clean, mindful living, the opportunity to help cultivate food that directly nourishes my neighbors is incredibly meaningful. There is a profound grounding effect that comes from putting your hands in the soil, knowing that the seeds you plant today will become the fresh meals on a neighbor’s table tomorrow.
2. A Holistic Approach to Community Wellness
What truly sets Owenwood apart is its “Neighbor Space” philosophy. They understand that health isn’t just about what’s on your plate; it’s about connection, education, and mutual support. From diaper pantries and educational programming to space for local collaborations, they look at the whole person and the whole neighborhood.
Volunteering here feels like joining a ecosystem of care. It’s a place where everyone is welcome, everyone is valued, and the ultimate goal is to help the entire community thrive together.
3. The Power of Local Connection
At the end of the day, true wellness starts locally—right in the neighborhoods where we live, work, and breathe. I am incredibly energized by the prospect of working alongside other passionate volunteers, meeting the residents, and listening to the stories that make this community so resilient.
Owenwood represents the very best of Dallas: collaborative, forward-thinking, deeply compassionate, and rooted in action.
Get Involved With Me!
If you’ve been looking for a way to give back, connect with the earth, and be part of a truly transformative local movement, I highly encourage you to look into Owenwood. They are always looking for hands to help on the farm, in the distribution networks, and across their various community programs.
I’ll be sure to share updates, photos, and reflections once I’m out there in the fields. Until then, if you see me covered in dirt and smiling from ear to ear, you’ll know exactly where I’ve been!
